Loneliness is Lovely

The space to breathe,
inhale my own breeze
and exhale stale air
is the luxury only
of the lonely

You see, I am the only
one who truly knows
how to keep me company,
what will make me laugh
feel nourishing or make
me burst in excitement.

I make our own jokes,
tease my own self,
caress my own arm
and fall and rise with ease,
both wholesome and holy

So, I sit in yummy silence
on the backyard hammock
listening to whispers
among trees when
Ishmael or Bill Plotkin
feel less welcome.

I tell myself all
of my day's stories of
silliness and sadness
and hold my own
precious in my
perfectly gentle arms.

So, yes my singleness
is lovelier to me
than all my lovers,
past partners combined

because to let anyone in
my heart sanctuary again
and not get trampled
for a few droplets of love in exchange
I need to be ready, learned
and qualified a plenty to
teach them how to
treat my temple and
truly love me.
