Note to the reader: Data is from the date of publishing, numbers have most likely changed as this is an evolving situation. Please use the sources linked to find the latest data where applicable.
Here is the reality, this is going to scare you. It scared the shit out of me. I am managing my fear and facing this reality with courage. I implore you to do the same.
Once we face reality with courage, we can playfully move into wonder and find our path ahead.
As of today (when published), we have 1301 cases.
Now, let's look at Italy’s numbers which is currently in complete lockdown. Brace yourself.
On Feb 28 they had 1128 cases (about where we are now) and the numbers on March 10 just 11 days later is 12,462.
Read this deep analysis.
This is fcking scary. Feeling terrified is normal in this situation.
Repeat: I am safe, I am safe to calm your reptilian brain.
Our government is underprepared. Our Medical Systems are going to get overburdened and maybe even collapse like Italy’s is right now.
Repeat: I am safe, I am safe.
JUST ACT NOW BY TAKING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!
Protect yourself and distance socially. Stay home. Protect your loved ones by asking them to do the same. Remember if you are healthier/younger you can be an asymptomatic carrier as well. Source CDC
Read learning ‘right action’ while managing fear and apathy and use my action plan as inspiration.
More questions? Here is a quick Q&A — ‘what to do if you think you have it’ or ‘what are the symptoms, etc’?
Just remember a communal virus spreads more within your existing connections. You are more likely to get it from existing relations. friends, family, colleagues. You are also most likely to give it to your friends and loved ones. Let this fear spring you into action in your power. You can protect yourself. And them. It is very simple. Social distancing is the best, cheapest and safest approach that can be used now!
Repeat: I am powerful, I am safe.
If courage got us till here, wonder can help us move forward
Self-isolation is not bad. We get free time! Paint, binge watch Netflix. Finish that project you keep putting off. Write that book. Design that website. Play Board Games. Call and talk to people. Schedule virtual meets with friends.
Be creative and find meaningful ways to reframe the self-imposed lockdown as a good thing. More ideas here, including how to create a schedule.
Other ideas from my friends and peers:
Make time for human things:
Cowork virtually:
Humor anyone?
more humor?
Stuck with kids at home? Ideas..
Had to cancel events? Don’t ask for refunds from small businesses.
Maybe some activism?
Sign a very important petition to help wage workers who won't be able to pay rent because of COVID-19. https://docs.google.com/forms/u/1/d/e/1FAIpQLScxOnG43U6d2d_R0SJi7f7uSEclMlz2Elt5k1qcXmX4M0GAqg/formResponse
Donate to this fund to support gig workers in the Bay Area.
Organize locally to help those in need
A group of theatre folks in the bay created a child care support network.
Another group organizing for financial solidarity in the Bay Area for people who need help.
Support your favorite local restaurant/business without going there: I also recommend supporting Chinese and POC businesses as they are already experiencing the effects of implcit racial bias during this crisis.
Maybe ask how your innate gifts can help?
A friend shared her recipe for Fire Cider for preventative care:
Ask fear nicely to release its hold on your mind and tug at your imagination.
